Born and raised in New York City, I've spent most of my adult life in Chicago. I have been shaped and inspired by both cities. Sometimes the tranquility of a rural setting can be an antidote to the demands and stresses of the big metropolis. Several of my images reflect the restoration and pleasure I've experienced in quiet settings, especially by water. But, I am forever drawn back to the energy and bustle of the urban landscape and to images that reflect the vitality of city life. I find as much excitement in the abstract details of a staircase as in the glee of a child frolicking in a fountain. Photographs have been my passion for as long as I can remember. The passion stayed with me through political activism in the 60's and 70's, the study of geology and acquisition of a Bachelor of Science degree at Northeastern Illinois University (1997,) and a 21-year career as a machinist and quality control technician in manufacturing. I never stopped loving the shooting of images during travels through Italy, across the United States, and walking down the streets and lakefront of Chicago. With minimal formal training (former membership in Chicago's Fort Dearborn Camera Club, Photoshop seminars, and ongoing participation in a photography critique group,) my main instruction has been through experience out in the streets and communities, the places and structures of the cities and towns on my journeys. Buildings and other architectural feats are one of the subjects that recur in my images. Buildings can move and inspire us, frustrate and annoy us. Shelter and utility at the very least, these are awesome creations of humanity at their finest. They interact with us far beyond their basic function to house our activities. They can occupy our minds and affect our sensibilities even as we occupy their space. As I capture more images I make new discoveries about my surroundings. How often do we stop to appreciate what is before us? We are surrounded by compelling designs everywhere we go: parks, libraries, theaters, office buildings, even a shopping mall: how often do we notice their impact on us? What rewards do we reap when we pause to consider the dimensions, shapes, textures, and sounds of the spaces we occupy! The photographs currently displayed on this site are digital images. Images are available framed and matted, using all archival materials. Some are available on gallery-wrapped canvas. Contact me for further details.
